Certificate in Consumer Law & Economic Justice

The Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice, EBCLC’s Consumer Justice Clinic, the Consumer Advocacy & Protection Society (CAPS), Consumer Protection Public Policy Order (C-3PO), and the Consumer Law & Economic Justice Faculty are pleased to recognize graduating Berkeley Law 3Ls and LLMs who have demonstrated a commitment to consumer protection and economic justice during their time at Berkeley Law. 

We invite students to apply for the Berkeley Law Consumer Law Certificate. Students who can meet the following criteria (which will be flexibly applied) and wish to receive the certificate should apply by mid-March of their 3L year. Certificate recipients will be honored at the Center’s annual Consumer Law Graduation. 

The Berkeley Law Consumer Law Certificate Program requires completion of the following (flexibly applied) criteria. Note that it is possible that exceeding the minimum requirements in one category may make up for not satisfying them in another:

1) At least 2 courses from the approved list of consumer law & economic justice courses at Berkeley Law.

2) At least 1 piece of written advocacy or scholarship on issues affecting consumer rights / economic justice:

  • Option 1 or 2 paper (through the courses listed above or a Law 299) 

  • Comment to a federal or state agency on a consumer issue

  • Amicus brief with the Center 

  • Student note 

  • Policy paper 

3) At least 1 summer or semester as intern/extern/Fellow/employee/research assistant/leader with one of the following organizations:

  • Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice

  • EBCLC Consumer Justice Clinic or Housing Clinic

  • Consumer government agencies (California AG's office, CFPB, FTC, DFPI, etc....)

  • Consumer non-profit organizations (Center for Responsible Lending, Bay Area Legal Aid, HERA, etc.)

  • Research assistant position for consumer law faculty

  • Pro bono work for C-3PO (two semesters required)

  • Leadership in on-campus consumer law student organizations (CAPS, C-3PO, and/or CLASS)

  • Other comparable experience.

You will be able to note any deviation from the (flexibly applied) criteria in the application.
