Sam Levine Appointed to Lead New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection

January 9, 2026

The Center, its staff and students, and the nationwide CLASS Network of law students and professors join in celebrating the appointment of Sam Levine to lead New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.

As Senior Fellow at the Center, Sam’s contributions included articles and op-eds, speeches, and testimony to Congress and state legislatures -- always on behalf of improving the lives of everyday consumers. Sam's efforts against junk fees, subscription traps, and unfair sales tactics have borne fruit across the nation. He has inspired untold numbers of students, practitioners, professors, and public servants to follow his example.

Sam is who he is and does what he does no matter who his audience may be. CEOs and senators hear the same message as law students and the public: Fairness matters. Privacy matters. Being able to afford to feed your family matters.

We at the Center are honored to have had Sam as a colleague this past year, and we are delighted to celebrate his new role leading New York City's top consumer protection agency. In his first week on the job, Mayor Mamdani has already issued executive orders taking on junk fees and subscription traps. The Levine magic is already at work.

Sam's blend of inspirational leadership, energetic innovation, and unswerving commitment to economic justice are exactly what's needed right now. The Big Apple will be a better place for having Sam around.
