New John Oliver Episode on Subscriptions Features Many Friends of the Center!

August 25, 2026

Just a note from your friendly neighborhood Center for Consumer Law & Economic Justice that John Oliver this week features an episode on Subscriptions that is positively riddled with friends of the Center (FOCs).

The piece begins with a picture of the seminal article on subscription traps by FOCs Professors Kaitlin Caruso and Prentiss Cox.

It shouts out a subscription rule promulgated by the Biden-era FTC, which the Center supported with 1) a comment arguing for the rule’s adoption; 2) an amicus brief championing the rule against an (ultimately successful) industry challenge; and 3) a comment endorsing the pending petition at the FTC to renew the rule.

It gives a nod to the state-level click-to-cancel law passed in California with the help of Center sister organization the California Low-Income Consumer Coalition (CLICC) (suggesting half-jokingly that the best way to protect yourself as a consumer is to convince a website that you live in California).

It gives a nod to laws enacted in Virginia and Louisiana by members of the Economic Justice Policy Advocates Coalition and supported by CLICC Deputy Director (and Center Policy Director) Shelmun Dashan.

And at the end, in the credits, it offers special thanks to Center BFFs Sam Levine and Erin Witte. It is worth, as Mr. Oliver might say, a gander.
